INTRODUCTION TO THE ARTIST AND THE EXHIBITION

Please let me introduce myself, Stephen Goddard; over the last decade I have been painting and showing my work at exhibition.

I began by painting for pleasure, learning and developing my style as I went. Whilst taking an 'A' level in art with Surrey Adult Education Just for the experience, I was invited by Surrey to be a tutor for them, this I accepted and continue to do to this day. I have also spent a year working as a volunteer for projects with-children and adults including those with special needs at the Sculpt-It studio and gallery in Godalming.

I have exhibited in both the UK and France, recent work has gone to California in the USA and St. Petersburg in Russia. Over the years I have completed many varied and interesting commissions.

It still is painting for pleasure, and I hope this exhibition will convey that. Being a geographer (having an honours degree in the subject), landscapes are a big part of my work. Last year I decided upon an open-ended project looking at trees in the local landscape.

Steam trains are also important, especially now they are back on our national railway network hauling rail tours. Having traveled on many tours, I paint them, often to help the preservation societies raise funds for the ever more expensive overhauls of these locomotives. (By 2004 all mainline locomotives need TPWS fitted costing ?20,000 a go, Just for one small bit of kit.)

As it states in the advertisement for wood treatments "It does what it says on the tin" and "Tall Ships, trees and Trains" does Just that, with many magnificent sailing ships represented. Being a member of Langstone Sailing Club with an old wooden GP 14 has expanded my art into seascapes. Last years finish of the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race in the Solent and the 2001 Festival of the Sea at Portsmouth form a large part of this exhibition.
